The female view
The exhibition brings together the work of two young photojournalism stars and an overview of Italian newspapers and periodicals for women of the 19th and early 20th twentieth century.
Axelle de Russé
China, the return of the concubine
In China, the status of a man was once measured by the number of women he had – wives and concubines. In 1949, the Communists banned the keeping of concubines, seeing it as a sign of bourgeois decadence, but now, after two decades of a market economy, the practice has returned. Axelle photographed the daily lives of three young concubines. Winner of the 2007 Canon Female Photojournalist Award at the photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France.
Hazel Thompson
Kids behind bars
Hazel worked as a volunteer in children’s prisons in Manila and secretly photographed the shocking conditions there: overcrowded and damp cells with dim light, stifling heat and no fresh air. Many of the children had skin diseases after months of being locked away. Winner of the 2006 CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage at the photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France.
